Identify the 2009 edition precisely
ADR 2009 was prepared for amendments applicable from 1 January 2009. The United Nations published the English edition in 2008 as a two-volume set, ECE/TRANS/202, with sales number 08.VIII.1 and set ISBN 9789211391312.
The UN Digital Library separately records Volume I and Volume II. Those identifiers are more useful for finding a historical reference than an old bookseller link. A publication year of 2008 and an edition labelled 2009 describe different aspects of the same reference.
Why the old title includes European
The title used in 2009 was European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road. That wording is appropriate when identifying this historical publication.
The word European was removed from the agreement's title with the 2021 edition, as UNECE explains. The present name is Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road. Preserving an older publication title does not mean the current agreement should be described by its former name.
Navigate the official historical archive
The UNECE ADR 2009 archive divides the annexes into files for Parts 1 to 9 and also lists the agreement, foreword and correction documents. This arrangement differs from the two-volume printed set described in the original article.
Identify the part and paragraph needed before selecting a file. The archive warns that electronic layout, symbols and equations may differ from the official publication. Page numbers from another format are therefore an unreliable way to identify a provision. Check the language and the corrections applicable to it as well.
Read older references in their original context
This edition can help interpret a citation in a 2009 training document, archived transport procedure or technical record. Retain the document's date and distinguish the wording then consulted from any later assessment. An archived publication alone does not establish the legal outcome of a historical case or the continued acceptance of old equipment.
For current operations, ADR 2025 is the applicable edition as at 12 October 2026, subject to the relevant provisions and transitions.
