Study of Safety and Health Conditions in the Work of Hazardous Goods Drivers. Situation Analysis and Intervention Proposals

December 9th, 2008: Presentation Day of the «Study of Safety and Health Conditions in the Work of Hazardous Goods Drivers. Situation Analysis and Intervention Proposals.»

As of: November 20th, 2008

The main objective of this project has been to analyze, from a technical and qualitative standpoint, the Safety and Health conditions in Road Transport of Hazardous Goods.

The result of this study has led to the development of a Guide of Good Labor and Environmental Practices for employers and workers aimed at reducing the risks associated with this activity by proposing preventive measures.

The increase in freight transport over the last decades is driven by the increased production capacity of companies. Requirements such as speed and reliability in delivery times make roads continue to be the dominant means of domestic freight transport. The use of Hazardous Goods (HG) is very common nowadays.
The transportation of HG entails significant risks to both drivers and third parties as well as the environment. These risks can lead to fatal consequences.

It is necessary to raise awareness among drivers about the intrinsic danger of these substances.
To identify the occupational and environmental risks of this activity, a technical study and an exhaustive qualitative study have been conducted on the applicable Regulations, Transportation of Hazardous Goods (material resources, infrastructure, human resources, contractual relationships, identification and incompatibility of substances, cleaning), Preventive Material (agreements, information/training), and accident rates.

The result of this analysis has led to the development of a Good Practices Guide with preventive measures for the identified risks.
