
On Monday, July 14, a tanker truck loaded with UN 1230 Toluene, Class 3 (6.1), Packing Group II caught fire following an accident on the A81 motorway between Sulz am Neckar and Empfingen (Germany).
Incident Summary:
• The vehicle crashed into a metal side barrier, overturned, and a violent fire broke out, generating a smoke plume visible from several kilometers away.
• The driver managed to escape on his own with minor injuries.
• Over 300 personnel responded to the emergency: firefighters, police, medical services, THW, hazardous materials technicians, and a specialized BASF team remained on site for over 20 hours until the situation was under control.
Safety and Environmental Protection:
• The motorway was completely closed until Tuesday night, after the fire was extinguished, the vehicle removed, and the roadway decontaminated.
• Environmental measurements were carried out within a 15 km radius, with no concerning levels of toxic substances detected.
