New Regulations for Lithium Battery Transportation: Key Updates

Starting May 10, 2024, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) will enforce the HM-215Q regulation, introducing significant updates to the transportation of lithium batteries under the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR). Key changes include:

Mandatory marking of watt-hour ratings on batteries exceeding 100 Wh.

Revised testing requirements and quantity limits for cells and batteries packed with equipment.

Elimination of exemptions for air shipments of batteries not packed or contained in equipment.

Removal of the requirement to include phone numbers on lithium battery markings, with a transition period until December 31, 2026.

The regulation strengthens safety measures for transporting lithium batteries due to inherent risks, such as fires or explosions caused by short circuits, mechanical damage, or manufacturing defects. These batteries, critical for devices like smartphones and electric vehicles, have high energy density and contain flammable electrolytes, necessitating proper handling and labeling to prevent incidents.

The DOT emphasizes that failure to comply with these regulations could result in penalties or even criminal prosecution. For more information, stakeholders are encouraged to contact the Hazardous Materials Information Center.

This update reinforces safety in the supply chain and highlights the responsibility of shippers to ensure secure and compliant shipments.
